Skijoring at Arrowhead for 2011

For those of you who know us at The Bike Shop in Gravenhurst, there's another passion besides the bicycle. Skijoring is a great way to get out and enjoy winter with your pet. What is skijoring? A sport in which a cross-country skier is attached by harnesses to one or more dogs. The sport is growing in intrest. We plan to make it larger as we scheduled 4 days of skijoring for Arrowhead Provincial Park in Huntsville. January 16th, February 6th, March 13th, and April 3rd. Times are from 10am to 3pm. For those with or without dogs are welcome to come out and join in the fun at Arrowhead. If you don't have the equipment we'll have gear to borrow. Instruction is available to teach you and your dog the best way to start skijoring.

It was but a week ago when I arrived to the store to find a lonely Donnie leaning against the bike bar with a long face. All it took to put a smile on that face was a FAT bike. A Surly Pugsley. Pretty neat, a bike that will conquer anything, snow, sand, moss, and a long faced fella.

If you have ever tried to ride a bike in the snow you quickly find out how difficult it is. Surly produces a bicycle that makes riding in snow, or anything soft for that matter, better. They should be here in about a weeks time. Come in and check them out.

Dates to Remember:

High Noon Showdown: October 17th at Buckwallow. Test you skills and time against yourself and others. Its a fun race set up the same way as a road bike time trial but in the woods on a mountain bike. Free to enter, prizes and ride to follow. Register before 11:30am on October 17th. Call the shop to sign up or on the day of. Start time is 12-noon.
Full Moon Night Ride: October 23rd at Torrence Barrens. Start time 6:30pm at the Barrens. If you haven't checked out this spot, this would be a great night to find out what it's all about. The moon should be full so hopefully lights won't be needed too much.

FUR-ocious SALE

Alright the riding season is upon us. Now the choice is what to do, mountain bike ride, road route, a cruise around town or to the local watering hole? So many options when it comes to the bicycle. I've had a few good conversations with people about the style of riding you would prefer to participate in. If your house has kick ass mountain bike trails out the back door and a beautifully paved road out the front door, which door would you choose?

We do both here at The Bike Shop in Gravenhurst. Our mountain bike rides are Wednesday at 6:30 at the trail head, and our road rides are Fridays at 6:00 leaving from the front doors. Are there any dirty ladies out there? Kristi is hosting full day women's camps again this year at the Buckwallow Cycling Centre. The cost is $75 which includes admission to Buckwallow, lots of food and coaching by Heather Stanley. Dates are June 20th, August 15th, September 12th and October 3rd. Call the shop for more details and to book your spot.

Well, spring has sprung. The group rides have started. Tune ups are abundant. If you haven't been out on the bike yet it's probably because you miss the snow, or your bike isn't quite up to your standards. This is the time to pick up a few things to make your spring rides as sweet as they can be. There's always little things to improve your bike without dipping into the beer fund. Bar wrap or grips is an inexpensive way to enhance the feel and the look of your bike. Fresh rubber is another great way to start off the season. Maybe a new pair of chamois to soften the transition to longer rides. Or stay in style at the pub with a new t-shirt while celebrating the ride. Whatever spring has in store were here to keep you cranking those pedals. Join us for a ride, off-road Wednesdays and on-road Fridays.

SKIJORING

Skijoring is a sport that originates in Scandinavia. It is simply a term used to describe a dog or dogs pulling someone on cross country skis. We have reserved dates to give everyone an opprotunity to experience what a great sport skijoring is. You can find us at Arrowhead Provincial Park in Huntsville on February 28th, March 14th and 21st from 10am to 3pm. I will also be at Gull Lake park in Gravenhurst at 3pm. This is in conjunction with the Gravenhurst Winter Carnival.

If you don't have the equipment, that's alright. There will be some gear to borrow and instruction on how to effectively ski with your dog. This is a great chance to try a new old sport with your own dog (who should be more than 30lbs).

Talking of Summer

Minus 15, and a little bit of sun can really lift someones spirits. As much as I love winter, the talk of riding can't help me look foreword to the warmer months. It could be a group ride in the Gravenhurst area or heading to Blue Mountain with a group of buddies for a guys weekend, riding = good times.

Winter is not over yet. We still have many cold nights ahead, but the days are getting longer. Summer is approaching. What are you doing to keep in tip top shape for summer? At the shop we're now spinning two night a week, Tuesdays at 7pm and Fridays 6ish. The shop will be hosting some skijor days over the next few weeks. Bring the dogs out to try this super fantastic winter sport. We'll keep you posted for the dates.

Snow's a Comin'

Well I know that the riding season is not over yet but as everyone knows the snow is just around the corner. It happens every year! Just a reminder that we're not closing and the winter products are coming out. Rossignol Nordic skis, Faber snowshoes and Ravens Watch dog sled gear. What dog sled gear you say? For those who don't know we do this little thing called Skijoring that's a dog(s) pulling you on cross country skis. Stay tuned we'll be hosting skijoring events throughout the winter.
